The Police Department values the partnership it has forged with Manhattan Beach residents to make the community a safe place to live and visit.  Programs such as Crime Prevention and Traffic Safety have strengthened relations between the Police and the public which has resulted in strong community support and involvement.  Police Officers are active participants in the city’s Neighborhood Watch Program and are a frequent presence in the local schools and high school where presentations and educational seminars are offered.  The Department also enjoys strong working relationships with other cities and police departments in the area to increase its public safety network of resources.  Manhattan Beach Police calls are dispatched by the South Bay Regional Public Communications Authority (RCC) located in the nearby city of Hawthorne.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Police Officer (Academy Graduate) is an apprentice level specification in which incumbents have graduated from a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Basic Academy training program, but have not received a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate with a comparable agency. Incumbents perform under direct supervision and generally do not perform police officer duties independently until the successful completion of field training.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·        High school diploma, G.E.D. or California H.S. Proficiency Exam

·        Police Officer (Academy Graduate) candidates must have graduated from a P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy at the time of appointment.

·        The completion of college level course work is desirable.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applications will be reviewed and a select group of candidates whose background and experience best meet our requirements will be invited to test.  Final appointment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a Captains’ interview, psychological evaluation, a polygraph examination, an extensive background investigation, and a pre-employment medical examination.  Candidates must successfully pass each step of the recruitment and selection process to be placed on the eligible list.
